Concept Art + Matte Painting + Matte Painting Supervision

Despite of all the challenges we had faced, Star Trek Discovery was the project full of creativity and excitement and resulted in some of the must fun concepts and matte paintings I had the chance to work on.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Tardigrade

Concept of texture + look explorations painted over grey shaded model base.
The following are my 2 versions and the albino look ended up being chosen as the final look and I did a mockup of it being lit in an environment.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Qonos

DMP of the Sarcophagus ship crash landed on Qonos from the memories.
I had a lot of fun creating this matte painting, then it became super dark in comp *sad face*.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Mirror Universe

Concept options of the Mirror Universe.
My personal favorite is the inverse white version with darker nebula strand.... but probably abit "out there" for the EPs.
They went with my purple nebula environment in the end and I was happy with how it turned out.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Alien Desert

Sequence concepts I did for the stormy desert in the alien planet.
At first we were told to explore the look of a purple look, and eventually became a more neutral orange.
Too bad, the purple was more interesting.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Devil in the Dark

As a part of Burnham's "trip" of seeing different locations from the past, this was one of them.
Full DMP environment of this underground mining complex.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Klingon Black Market

Concepts of the Klingon Black Market in the middle of mountains and a remote location.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Klingon Council Chambers

Klingon Council Chamber concept
This initial concept I had a strong light source for a better silleoutte on the character.
The final look of the sequence ended up being much darker as they are deeper down under underground.
Red lava veins flowing between the rocks while having some glowing deep green crystal mineral deposits.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

DMP set extension of rocky exterior, lava and crystal veins.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Klingon Sarcophagus Ship Ceiling Set Extension

This sequence was divided between the team based on the direction/angle we see the ceiling.
Based on render per angle we DMPed the separate elements and projected back to the proxy geos.
It was a great team effort while I supervised and we delivered the sequence smoothly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Corvan Base

DMP terrain and mountain environment.
I worked on the closeup shots while having the team and help focus on the wider angle below for all the view screen shots.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Space

And how can we have no space in a StarTrek show?
Just some Planets, Nebulas and SHip damage etc a long the way.
